Iam provideo animo, velut qui, proximis littori vadis inducti, mare pedibus ingrediuntur,
quicquid progredior, in vastiorem me altitudinem, ac velut profundum invehi;
et crescere pene opus, quod prima quaeque perficiendo minui videbatur.

I plainly foresee that, like those who are tempted by the shallows near the shore 
to walk into the sea, the further I advance, I am carried into the greater depth
and abyss as it were; and that my work rather increases on my hands, than diminishes,
as I expected, by the first parts of being completed.

Ich sehe klar voraus, dass ich, je weiter ich vorankomme, in die größere Tiefe und den 
Abgrund hineingetrieben werde, wie diejenigen, die von den Untiefen in Ufernähe dazu
verleitet werden, ins Meer zu gehen; und dass mein Werk eher an meinen Händen zunimmt,
als dass es, wie ich erwartet hatte, durch die ersten Teile seiner Vollendung abnimmt.
